Cleveland managed only three hits — none over the final five innings — Cleveland’s broken bats were at the root of another disappointing defeat, 5-0 to the Padres, and a series setback Sunday afternoon at Progressive Field. San Diego had more home runs (four) than the Guardians had hits.
It was the ninth loss in 12 games for the fading-fast Guardians, who are 6-17 over their last 23 games and trail the first-place White Sox by six in the Central Division standings.
Cleveland was shut out for the 11th time, which is tied for fourth-most in the majors.
Right-hander Tanner Bibee allowed three runs (two homers) over six innings and fell to 4-13 on the season.
Cleveland got all its hits off starter Casey Mize, but the left-hander permitted only one baserunner to advance past first and retired 14 of the last 16 batters he faced. It was Mize’s third start for the Padres after being acquired from the Tigers at the trading deadline.
